Happy Hours

The Penn Club of Portland's periodic "Happy Hours," such as the "First September Happy Hour" and the "Holiday Happy Hour," provide an opportunity for alums, and in particular younger alums, to discuss common experiences, to network and share career ideas and opportunities, and to make new friends in the community. Check this Web site for the location of the upcoming gathering. Previous festivities have been held at Andina, Lucky Labrador, Meriwether's, Huber's, Bridgeport Brewery, the V.Q. and the Tea Court (Historic Lobby Lounge) in the Heathman Hotel.

Rescheduled from last year when we were snowed out! The historic Brasserie Montmartre is restored and reopened. Join Penn alums and friends on Monday, December 21, to celebrate the Holiday Season and the coming of Winter (earlier in the day at 9:47pst). 2009 Penn Club Book Awards
In June, the Penn Club of Portland once again presented book awards to outstanding students at four Oregon high schools. This year's book was Benjamin Franklin, Writer and Printer, co-authored by Penn professor Peter Stallybrass and James Green of the Library Company of Philadelphia, and was presented to:

Penn Reading Project 2009


This year's Penn Reading Project asks the incoming Class of 2013 to explore visual art rather than literary art by engaging in discussions of the painting, The Gross Clinic, by Thomas Eakins. Once again, in support of an incoming class, we will schedule a fall discussion of this masterpiece with all who are interested.

PAST EVENTS

Summer Lawn Party 2009
Jon (GR'72) and Naomi Deitz hosted the 2009 Summer Lawn Party for all Penn Club of Portland members, Penn friends, Penn students and Penn families, held Thursday evening, August 6th. The traditional lawn was replaced by a deck surrounded by tall Douglas firs., and a good time was had by all, including most of the area's members of the Class of 2013. At the March Luncheon at the University Club, Joel Millman, FAS '76, presented an interesting account of his journalistic career, of his various assignments at the Wall Street Journal and of the state of the print media today.


An Evening With Penn Professor Peter Stallybrass

Penn Professor Peter Stallybrass joined a full house in the Cascade Room at Jake's Famous Crawfish for our Winter dinner and entertained the gathering with information about the fascinating innovations at the Penn Library, the amazing collection of rare documents at Penn and at the other libraries in Philadelphia, and the hands-on teaching that is going on at our alma mater.

Penn alums and friends celebrated Ben Franklins 303rd birthday at long-time Portland institution, Poor Richards. Among those who showed up was Ben himself, looking amazingly fit for his years.
