Summer Lawn Party
Monday, August 11, 2008
1515 S.W. Myrtle St.
Portland, OR 97201
It's summer and, once again, it's time for our Summer Lawn Party for Penn Club of Portland members, Penn students and Penn families and friends. Ernie and Annie Munch, Par'06, are once again graciously hosting the event on their beautiful lawn overlooking downtown Portland.

This will be a great opportunity to meet the 20 new members of Penn's Class of 2012 from Oregon and S.W. Washington. Let's welcome this largest class ever from our area - and - their families into the Penn community.

Penn alums are urged to bring an easy-to-serve appetizer, salad or dessert.

Please RSVP and let us know what you would like to contribute:

First September/Fall Happy Hour
Wednesday, September 17, 2008
Lucky Labrador Beer Hall
1945 N.W. Quimby
Portland, OR 97209
Recently graduated members of the Class of 2008 are invited to join other alumni and friends of Penn for food, beverage, and conversation at the Lucky Labrador Beer Hall in an old Freightliner Trucking warehouse "in the final frontier of inner Northwest Portland." Gather on the outdoor deck in the September Oregon sunshine or, in the unlikely event of a drip or two, inside under the "resident five ton crane hovering above the tables." Look for friendly faces and our small and tasteful tabletop Penn flag and be a part of the celebration of fall and our new Penn community members.

Fall Dinner with Professor Peter Stallybrass
Friday, November 7, 2008
Join us for dinner and a chance to meet and listen to thoughts from Penn Professor Peter Stallybrass. Professor Stallybrass, Annenberg Professor in the Humanities and Professor of English and of Comparative Literature and Literary Theory, is making this trip to meet with alumni in the Pacific Northwest.

Penn Reading Project 2008
Once again members of the Penn Club of Portland are invited to show solidarity with the incoming Class of 2012 by reading the book that all incoming freshmen have been assigned to read and discuss. Read this year's book, Your Inner Fish by Neil Shubin, and discuss the book with other readers at an event later in the fall.

Spring Luncheon with
Juliana Montgomery: Shocked by She

At our April 11th luncheon, Juliana Montgomery, daughter of Michael Montgomery (Fels'92), discussed and showed a preview of her new documentary film, Shocked by She: A Czechsploration of Images of Women. The film, exploring feminism and the images of women in Czech visual culture beginning with the Czech New Wave film era in the 1960s, is currently in post-production and projected to be completed by late-2008. Click Here (MS Word file, 40kb) for a list of Juliana's recommended Czech New Wave films along with her comments.

2007's Summer Lawn Party for all Penn Club of Portland members, Penn friends, Penn students and Penn families was held on a beautiful Thursday evening, August 9th.

Special thanks to Jim and Linda Patterson(C'64 and CW'64) for hosting the event this year on their lovely lawn on the north shore of the Columbia River. Even the trepidation of traveling out of state didn't discourage alums and current students from showing up to welcome many of the 18 new members of Penn's Class of 2011 from Oregon and S.W. Washington and their families into the Penn community.

Penn Glee Club Visits Portland
Everyone who heard the Penn Glee Club at the University Club on May 19 was charmed both by their elegant harmonies and by their engaging personalities. Glee Club alums Ron Hjelm and George Cicotte joined the performance, which was concluded, of course, by a rousing chorus of "The Red and the Blue."

We are very grateful to event patrons Clifford and Jean Mansley, Taizoon Doctor, Jonathan Kowolik, and George Cicotte.
